Portorož is Slovenia's answer to a seaside resort — the longest sandy beach on the coast, a promenade lined with hotels, a casino, and a lively summer atmosphere. Right next door (2 km away) is Piran, the historic jewel of the Slovenian Riviera. Most visitors base themselves in Portorož and walk to Piran for the atmosphere.
From Ljubljana it's 135 km, about 1h 45min by car. There is no train line to the coast.
Getting There
Via Koper — 2 to 2.5 hours
Buses from Ljubljana's Avtobusna postaja run to the coast with a change in Koper. The bus terminates on the main road through Portorož — convenient for most hotels. Outside summer, frequency drops, so check ap.si for current timetables.
Shared shuttle, picks you up at home
GoOpti covers Ljubljana–Portorož. Door to door, lower price than private. Flexible timing — they confirm departure once they've matched passengers. Good for solo travellers heading to well-known hotel areas.
Direct, your hotel, fixed price
We pick you up in Ljubljana and drive to your Portorož hotel without stops. For families or groups with luggage, this is the most comfortable option. The same price also covers Piran if that's where you're staying.
Portorož & Piran — Best of Both
These two towns are so close that most visitors experience both. Here's how they differ:
- Portorož — the beach (300m sandy beach), modern hotels, casino, nightlife, water sports. More of a conventional resort feel.
- Piran — medieval alleys, Venetian architecture, seafront squares, local restaurants. More history, more character, smaller scale.
The walk between them along the coast takes about 25 minutes. If you're in Portorož for the beach and want to explore the old town, Piran is right there.
Questions
Can I fly to Portorož?
There is a small airport near Portorož (LJPZ), but scheduled commercial flights are very limited. Most people arrive via Ljubljana Airport (Brnik) — we cover the Brnik to Portorož route directly, about 1h 50min.
When is the best time to visit?
June and September are ideal — warm enough for the beach, without the peak-summer crowds of July–August. The coast stays pleasant into early October.
