Lake Bled is Slovenia's most photographed place β an emerald-green lake, a fairytale island with a church, a medieval castle on a cliff, and the Julian Alps as a backdrop. It's 57 km from Ljubljana, about 45 minutes by car, and it absolutely lives up to the photos.
Getting there without a car is straightforward β you have several good options. The one that suits you best depends on your budget and group size.
Ways to Get There
Scenic, cheap β but drops you 4 km short
The train from Ljubljana to Lesce-Bled takes about 55 minutes through beautiful Sava river scenery. The snag: Lesce-Bled station is 4 km from the lake. From there, local bus 8 runs to Bled (check the timetable β it's infrequent) or take a short local taxi.
Direct to the lake β the most practical public option
Buses from Ljubljana's main bus station (Avtobusna postaja) run directly to Bled and drop you near the lake β no second leg required. Several departures daily. Check ap.si for timetables.
Shared shuttle β door to door at a budget price
GoOpti picks you up at your Ljubljana address and drops you at Bled. They combine passengers going the same direction. Departure time may shift slightly depending on other bookings. Good for solo travellers or couples who value door-to-door convenience.
45 minutes, door to door, your schedule
We pick you up anywhere in Ljubljana and take you directly to Bled β hotel, campsite, the lake shore, anywhere. Fixed price agreed before departure. For 3β4 people it's often competitive with GoOpti per head, and significantly faster and more comfortable with luggage.
Once You're There β What Not to Miss
The lake is beautiful from any angle, but a few things take the visit from good to unforgettable:
- Bled Island β take the traditional wooden pletna boat (β¬18 return) and ring the wishing bell in the church. The walk up the 99 steps is part of the experience.
- Bled Castle β perched 130m above the lake on a sheer cliff. The view from the battlements is stunning, and the small museum inside is worth half an hour. About 20 min walk from the lake.
- Vintgar Gorge β 4 km from the lake, a wooden boardwalk follows a river through a dramatic narrow gorge for 1.6 km. Usually less crowded than the lake itself, and genuinely spectacular. Open MayβOctober.
- KremΕ‘nita β the famous Bled cream cake. The version at the Park hotel cafΓ© overlooking the lake is the benchmark. Order one.
Practical Questions
Is Bled worth it if I only have one day?
Absolutely. A day trip from Ljubljana is very manageable β 45 min each way by car. You have enough time to see the island, the castle and Vintgar Gorge in a comfortable day. If you can stay overnight, the experience is even better β the lake at dawn is something else.
Can we swim in Lake Bled?
Yes β there are several public swimming spots around the lake. The water is clean and gets warm by mid-summer. The best spots are on the north and east shores away from the main tourist area.
For a family of 4, what's the best option?
A private transfer at β¬75 total works out to β¬18.75 per person β similar to or cheaper than GoOpti, and you get direct door-to-door service with your luggage, your own departure time, and no stops. Much easier with children.
