Poreč sits on a small peninsula on the western Istrian coast, 185 km from Ljubljana. It's one of the most visited towns in Croatia — and it earns that. The 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica in the old town is a genuine masterpiece of Byzantine mosaic art, UNESCO-listed and free to enter. The old town itself, built on a Roman grid, is full of character. And the beaches and sea around Poreč are excellent.

What Poreč Is About
Poreč works on two levels — the historic old town and the modern resort surrounding it.
- Euphrasian Basilica — 6th-century Byzantine mosaics covering the apse. This is one of the finest early Christian monuments in Europe. The golden background and vivid figures are still astonishing after 1500 years. Free entry to the courtyard and basilica.
- Decumanus — the old Roman main street, still the main artery of the old town. Roman-era buildings, medieval houses, craft shops.
- Beaches — the main beach is close to the old town. Better coves are north and south of town. Water quality is consistently high.
- Baredine Cave — 7 km from Poreč, a network of stalactite caves with an underground lake. Good on a hot day. Open to visitors with guides.
- Istrian hinterland — Grožnjan, Motovun, Oprtalj — hilltop medieval towns 20–30 km inland, known for truffles, wine and olive oil. Worth a half-day detour.
