Ljubljana Airport — IATA code LJU, officially Jože Pučnik Airport — is a compact and straightforward terminal about 26 km north of Ljubljana. Check-in and security rarely take more than 30–40 minutes, even in summer. That said, factor in travel time from wherever you are staying — Bled, the coast, Istria — and book your pickup accordingly.
The departures terminal has a café, a handful of shops, and a duty-free area past security. Nothing overwhelming — which is also why passengers consistently rate it one of the more pleasant small European airports to depart from.
→ Live Departures Board (FlightRadar24)Most airport transfer services only pick up from Ljubljana. We don't. We come to you — from Bled, from the Adriatic coast, from the hills of Istria — and drive you directly to Brnik. No bus. No train. No change of vehicle halfway.
There is no single right answer. The best option depends on three things: how much time you have, how tired you are, and how much you want to spend. Here is a straight rundown of every realistic option.
Good news and bad news. The good news: Slovenia has a decent rail network. The bad news: Ljubljana Airport has no train station. The nearest railway stop is Kranj, about 10 km away — which means you first need to get yourself to Kranj, then catch a train to Ljubljana, then figure out how to get from Ljubljana train station to the airport. That is three legs, two vehicles, and a lot of luggage shuffling. If you are coming from Ljubljana city centre, taking the train to Brnik is not the obvious choice. If you are anywhere further — Bled, the coast, Istria — forget it. Not because it is impossible, just because life is short.
Arriva runs a regular bus service between Ljubljana city centre and the airport. Cheap, reliable during the day, not great at 4am when your flight leaves at 6. If you are in Ljubljana city and travelling light, the bus is perfectly fine. If you are in Bled, Piran, Portorož, or anywhere in Croatia — there is no direct bus to the airport. You would need to get to Ljubljana first, then take the airport bus. By the time you add it all up, the time saving over a private transfer mostly disappears.
If you have been driving around Slovenia or Istria with a rental car, returning it at Brnik Airport is actually one of the smoother options. All major companies — Europcar, Hertz, Budget, Sixt, Alamo — have desks at the terminal. Return the car, walk into departures, done. Just remember to fill up the tank beforehand (petrol station about 2 km from the airport) and factor in the return paperwork, which adds 15–20 minutes. Also worth checking: some rental companies charge a drop-off fee if you picked up the car at a different location.
Every tourist area has local taxis, and most drivers know the route to Brnik. Honest assessment: it can work well, but the price varies a lot. A local taxi from Bled to the airport might cost €70, or it might cost €120 depending on who you ask and how the negotiation goes. Worth comparing prices in advance. The main issue with a local taxi is reliability on the day — especially for early morning pickups. If the driver is not there at 3:30am, you have a problem.
You agree the price in advance, the driver is there on time, and you go directly to the airport with no detours. Works from anywhere — Bled, Bohinj, the coast, Istria. The trade-off is cost: it is more expensive than the bus, and usually slightly more than a lucky local taxi. But you know exactly what you are paying, exactly when the car arrives, and exactly how long the journey takes. For the last morning of a holiday, that peace of mind is worth something.
This is the most common question — and an important one. Arriving too early means a long wait at the airport. Arriving too late means stress you don't need at the end of a holiday.
We calculate the pickup time for you, based on your location, your flight time, and a realistic buffer. Here are typical journey times from the most common starting points:
| From | Journey to Airport | Recommended pickup before flight |
|---|---|---|
| Ljubljana city centre | ~30 min | 2h 15min before departure |

Yes — our van takes up to 8 passengers with luggage. Transfer from Piran to Ljubljana Airport for a group is €200 fixed price. Much cheaper and simpler than two separate taxis.
We do. A 6am departure from Ljubljana Airport means we pick you up from Piran or Portorož around 3:45am. It's not glamorous, but it's done. Book the day before and we're there.
From Rovinj we cross into Slovenia near Sečovlje and continue on the Slovenian motorway network to Brnik. Journey time roughly 2h 30min. We calculate pickup time accordingly.
Yes — if time allows, a brief stop is no problem. Just mention it when booking and we'll factor it into the pickup time so you still arrive at the airport with a comfortable buffer.
