If you want Croatian coastal sun, clear Adriatic water, and a proper seaside atmosphere without a long drive, Umag is your closest option. It's also significantly more relaxed than the bigger Istrian towns.

Umag β Quieter Than You'd Expect
Umag doesn't shout about itself the way Rovinj or PoreΔ do. It has a compact medieval old town on a small peninsula, good beaches, excellent water quality, and a laid-back atmosphere. It's also known for tennis β the Croatia Open ATP tournament takes place here every July.
- Old town β the small historic centre has a 16th-century loggia, seafront promenade, and local restaurants that don't feel like tourist traps.
- Beaches β mostly pebble and rock, with some sandy areas at larger resort hotels. Calm, clear water.
- Novigrad β 12 km south along the coast, a picturesque small town with an even more relaxed feel than Umag. Reachable by bike along the coastal road.
- Istrian interior β within 30 km you can reach the hilltop truffle town of Motovun or the artists' village of GroΕΎnjan β very different from the coast.
