Shorter by distance. The section between Tržič and the Ljubelj tunnel has curves and climbs — not a mountain pass in the dramatic sense, but not a motorway either. After the tunnel, you're on Austrian roads heading toward Ferlach and then Klagenfurt.

Motorway from Ljubljana to the tunnel — smooth and straightforward in normal traffic. The Karawanken tunnel (4.5 km) is a paid border crossing. Natural choice for the eastern part of the lake (Klagenfurt, Krumpendorf).
