How to Get from Trieste Airport to Slovenia

Trieste Airport is just ~95 km from Ljubljana and only ~65 km from Piran on the Slovenian coast. It's the closest major airport to Slovenia's Adriatic side. Transport options are more limited than bigger airports, but a private transfer makes a lot of sense here.

🚌 Bus via Trieste city Airport bus to Trieste city (~35 min), then check ap-ljubljana.si for buses to Ljubljana or Koper. Connections exist but journey time total is 2h+.

🚗 Rent a car Car rental available at TRS. Drive east on SS14/A4 towards the border at Fernetti/Sežana, then straight to Ljubljana (~1h) or south to Piran (~55 min). Straightforward drive.

Trieste: Worth a Stop Before Crossing Into Slovenia

Most travellers fly into Trieste and head straight to Slovenia. But Trieste itself is worth an hour or two — especially if you land mid-afternoon. The city centre is 35 km from the airport: the Canal Grande, Piazza Unità d'Italia, and the old Habsburg coffee houses along the waterfront. It's a very different atmosphere from Venice — quieter, literary, more Central European in feel.

☕ Caffè degli Specchi — Piazza Unità The most famous square in Trieste, right on the Adriatic. This is where James Joyce drank coffee, and where you'll understand why Trieste is different from the rest of Italy.

🏰 Miramare Castle — 8 km from airport 19th century Habsburg castle on a cliff over the sea. 20 minutes from the airport on the way to Slovenia. Worth stopping if you have time.

🪨 Karst / Kras region The first thing you cross when you enter Slovenia from Trieste is the Karst plateau — limestone rock, famous red wine (Teran), prosciutto (pršut), and the Lipica stud farm (white Lipizzan horses). Easy detour.

Trieste Airport — Best Placed for the Slovenian Coast

If your final destination is Piran, Portorož, or anywhere on the Slovenian Adriatic, Trieste Airport is the smartest choice. It's the closest non-Ljubljana airport to the Slovenian coast — under 45 minutes by private transfer.

        🌊 TRS → Piran — ~45 min
        Fastest option for the Slovenian coast. Cross the border at Sežana, continue south on the H5 motorway to Koper/Piran. Straightforward.
      

🏙️ TRS → Ljubljana — ~1h 30 min Via the A1 motorway through the Karst. Easy drive, no mountain passes.

🏔️ TRS → Bled — ~1h 45 min Continue past Ljubljana on the A1/A2 into the Julian Alps. Good if Bled is your main destination and you don't need to stop in Ljubljana.

🇭🇷 TRS → Istria (Poreč, Rovinj) — ~1h 30–2h Cross into Slovenia, then south through the Slovenian coast and into Croatian Istria. Poreč ~135 km, Rovinj ~150 km.
