How to Get from Vienna Airport to Slovenia

Vienna is ~380 km from Ljubljana — about 3h 30 min by car via the A2 motorway south. It's a longer journey than other options, but if your connection brings you through Vienna, it's very doable. Public transport is good on this route.

🚂 Train Train Vienna → Graz (~2h 30 min on Railjet), then change for Ljubljana (~1h 45 min). Total ~4h 30 min, scenic. Vienna Airport to Wien Hauptbahnhof by CAT train (~16 min). Book at ÖBB.

Connecting Through Vienna? Here's Your Plan

Vienna Airport is one of the main gateways into Central Europe for long-haul flights from North America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Many travellers flying into the region land at VIE first — then continue to Slovenia by ground transfer.

If your final destination is Bled, Ljubljana, Piran or anywhere in Slovenia, you don't need a second flight. We meet you at the arrivals hall and drive you directly.

Two Routes from Vienna to Slovenia — Which One?

There are two main driving routes from Vienna to Slovenia, and which one is better depends on where you're going.

🛣️ Via Graz (A2) — for Ljubljana, Bled, most of Slovenia The standard route. Vienna → Graz → Karawanken Tunnel → Ljubljana. About 380 km, 3h 30 min in normal traffic. Most of the drive is motorway. This is what we use for Ljubljana and northern Slovenia.

🏔️ Via Klagenfurt (A10/A11) — for Kranjska Gora, Bled via the north Slightly longer in km but scenic — passes through the Austrian Alps, Villach, and enters Slovenia through the Karavanke tunnel. Good option for guests heading to Kranjska Gora, Bohinj or western Bled. We choose the route based on your destination and traffic.

Where Are You Going in Slovenia?

From Vienna Airport, every major Slovenian destination is reachable in a single comfortable drive. Here's what to expect:

🏙️ Ljubljana — ~3h 30 min The capital. Compact, walkable, excellent food and coffee. Good base for day trips to Bled and Piran. We drop you at your hotel door.

🏔️ Lake Bled — ~3h 45 min The island church, the castle, the Julian Alps. One of the most photographed spots in Europe — and genuinely worth it. We drive you directly from VIE arrivals to your hotel on the lake.

🌊 Piran / Portorož — ~5h The Slovenian coast — Venetian architecture, Adriatic sea, excellent seafood. Longer drive from Vienna but very doable in one go.

🌿 Kranjska Gora / Bohinj — ~4h Alpine Slovenia. Quieter than Bled, just as beautiful. Good for walkers and skiers.

🇭🇷 Istria (Croatia) — ~5–6h Rovinj, Poreč, Pula — all reachable from Vienna in one transfer if you'd rather skip Ljubljana and go straight to the coast. We do this regularly for guests flying into VIE heading to Croatian holidays.
