Train, bus, shuttle, rental car, or private transfer — every option honestly explained, with routes to Croatia, Italy, and Austria
Slovenia is small — 270km across at its widest — but it's not as easy to navigate as it looks on a map. Trains are limited, buses don't go everywhere, and some of the most beautiful destinations have no rail connection at all. Here's what actually works.
Door to door, fixed price, no connections. Best for airport runs, resort destinations, and cross-border travel. We pick you up anywhere.
Most flexible if you're confident driving. Good roads, but mountain routes need care. Motorway vignette required (€15/week). Parking in Bled very expensive.
Covers most towns from Ljubljana. Cheap but slow, infrequent in evenings and early morning. No buses from Ljubljana Airport directly to Bled.
Good for Ljubljana–Maribor. Slow elsewhere. No train to Bled, Piran, or the coast. Not realistic for most tourist destinations.
Cheaper than private, but shared with strangers. Detours for other pickups, fixed schedules. Limited routes outside Ljubljana.

Croatia's Istrian peninsula and the Kvarner coast are among the most popular add-ons to a Slovenia trip — and they're very reachable. Since Croatia joined the Schengen zone in January 2023, there are no border stops for EU and Schengen passport holders. You drive straight through.
Public transport between Slovenia and Croatian tourist destinations is essentially non-existent. There is no bus from Ljubljana Airport to Rovinj, Poreč, or Pula. The only realistic option is a private transfer or a rental car.
| Destination | Distance from Ljubljana Airport | Transfer time | Price from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rijeka | 120 km | ~1h 30min | €150 car · €210 van |

Italy is Slovenia's western neighbour — Trieste is just 100km from Ljubljana, Venice is 250km. Both countries are Schengen, so there's no border check. Many visitors fly into Venice or Trieste and want to reach Slovenia, or fly home from there at the end of a trip.
| Destination / Airport | From Ljubljana Airport | Transfer time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trieste / Trieste Airport (TRS) | ~100 km | ~1h 10min | Closest Italian city. Arriva bus exists Ljubljana–Trieste but no airport connection. |
| Venice Marco Polo (VCE) | ~250 km | ~2h 30min | No direct train. Private transfer most practical for airport run. |
| Treviso Airport (TSF) | ~255 km | ~2h 30min | Same distance as Venice. Ryanair hub. |
| Udine / Friuli | ~140 km | ~1h 30min | Popular day trip from Ljubljana. Accessible by private transfer. |
Austria borders Slovenia to the north. Klagenfurt (Celovec) is just 90km from Ljubljana Airport — closer than Piran on the Slovenian coast. Graz is 195km. Many travelers fly in or out of Austrian airports when visiting both countries.
| Destination / Airport | From Ljubljana Airport | Transfer time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Klagenfurt / KLU Airport | ~90 km | ~1h | Closest Austrian airport. Direct motorway via Karawanken tunnel. |
| Graz / GRZ Airport | ~195 km | ~2h | Via A9/E57 motorway through Spielfeld border crossing. |
| Vienna / VIE Airport | ~390 km | ~3h 45min | Long transfer but popular for groups. Train is also an option (3.5h, no airport connection). |
No direct train. The nearest station is Lesce-Bled, 6km from the lake. Trains from Ljubljana take 1h 20min on a slow regional line, and you still need a taxi or bus from the station to the lake. Most tourists use a private transfer instead (€75, 45 minutes, door to door).
Not directly. You'd take the Arriva airport shuttle to Ljubljana city (45 min), then a separate bus to Lesce-Bled station (1h 20min), then a taxi to the lake. Total: 2.5–3 hours. A direct private transfer takes 45 minutes and costs from €75.
Yes. A weekly e-vignette costs €15 and must be purchased before entering the motorway. Available at gas stations, online at dars.si, or at the border. Police check these regularly and fines are significant.
Croatian motorways use toll booths — no vignette needed. You pay at the gate, cash or card. The roads in Istria are well maintained. Since 2023, no passport or border check for Schengen travellers.
Fly into Ljubljana (or Venice), spend 2–3 days in Ljubljana and Bled, then transfer to the Istrian coast (Rovinj, Pula, Umag). Fly home from Pula Airport, Venice, or back from Ljubljana. We can do both the Slovenia and Croatia legs of your journey.
