Kranjska Gora β Gateway to Three Countries
Kranjska Gora sits in the far northwest corner of Slovenia, where the borders of Slovenia, Austria and Italy meet. In winter it's one of Slovenia's premier ski resorts β home to World Cup downhill and slalom races on the Vitranc slope. In summer it transforms into a hiking and cycling destination, with the VrΕ‘iΔ mountain pass (the highest in Slovenia) just above town.
From Ljubljana Airport, the drive takes about 1.5 hours through the Sava valley β one of the most scenic drives in the country, with the Julian Alps rising steadily as you go northwest.

Kranjska Gora β Beyond Skiing
Most guides describe Kranjska Gora purely in terms of ski season. That's half the story. The town sits in the Sava Dolinka valley with the Julian Alps directly above, and in summer it becomes a hiking and cycling destination that is quieter, greener, and considerably cheaper than winter.
The VrΕ‘iΔ mountain pass (1,611m) opens in late May and closes with the first heavy snow (usually October). The road over it is the highest mountain road in Slovenia and passes through WWI Russian prisoner-of-war history β the Russian Chapel near the top was built in memory of prisoners who died building the road in 1916. It's 24 hairpin bends each way. We can drive it as part of your transfer if you want the scenic route.
From Kranjska Gora you can cross into Austria (Villach, 45 min) or Italy (Tarvisio, 20 min) with no border formalities. If you're doing a multi-country Alps circuit, Kranjska Gora is a logical stop.
The Zelenci Nature Reserve β 4 km west of town β is the source of the Sava river. A short walk from the car park to a pool of water so clear and turquoise it doesn't look real. Takes 30 minutes. Worth it.
