Why Portoroz?
Slovenia's coastline is just 46 kilometers long — one of the shortest in Europe. But what it lacks in length, it makes up for in charm. And Portoroz is its crown jewel for beach lovers.
The name means "Port of Roses," and the town has been a resort destination since the 13th century, when monks discovered the healing properties of the local salt pans and mud. Today it's Slovenia's go-to spot for sun, sea, and relaxation.
Think palm-lined promenades, a proper sandy beach (rare in this part of the Adriatic), wellness hotels with thermal pools, a casino, and a marina filled with sailing yachts. It's relaxed, walkable, and surprisingly affordable.
Things to Do in Portoroz
- The beach — the main beach has fine sand (imported, but who's complaining), calm water, and sunbed rentals
- Spa & wellness — several hotels offer thermal water, thalassotherapy, and sea-salt treatments
- Marina — stroll along the yacht-filled harbor, especially beautiful at sunset
- Walk to Piran — the coastal path to Piran takes about 30 minutes and is lovely
- Secovlje Salt Pans — a nature park where salt is still harvested by hand, great for bird watching
- Casino — if you're feeling lucky, Portoroz has one of Slovenia's best casinos
- Water sports — jet skiing, parasailing, stand-up paddleboarding
The Drive to Portoroz
From Ljubljana Airport, the drive takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. From Ljubljana city center, about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The route crosses the Karst region — a limestone plateau famous for wine (try Teran!) and prosciutto. The landscape changes dramatically: from green alpine valleys to Mediterranean warmth.
We drop you off at your hotel entrance. Most hotels in Portoroz are along the main promenade, easy to reach.
Good to Know
Portoroz or Piran — where should I stay?
Portoroz for beach, hotels, and nightlife. Piran for old-town charm and romance. They're only 3 km apart, so you can enjoy both regardless of where you stay.
Is Portoroz good for families?
Very much so. The beach is gentle, the water is calm, and there are plenty of family-friendly restaurants. Kids love the waterpark at some of the larger hotels.
When is the best time to visit?
June through September for beach weather. July and August are warmest but also busiest. June and September are ideal — warm enough for swimming, fewer crowds.
