Maribor — Slovenia's Second City

Maribor is Slovenia's second-largest city and the capital of the Štajerska wine region. The old town along the Drava river is one of Slovenia's most handsome — the 15th-century castle, the cathedral, and Lent district with its medieval water tower. In the old town square stands the world's oldest known living vine (over 400 years old), still producing wine each harvest.

From Ljubljana Airport, Maribor is about 1.5–2 hours east by private car, heading along the A1 motorway through central Slovenia.

Maribor — What Most Visitors Miss

Maribor is commonly visited for the Old Vine (Stara trta) — and rightly so. The vine is 400+ years old, still producing Žametovka grapes each autumn, and it's in the middle of a small wine house on the waterfront. The harvest festival in October draws thousands. But most visitors see the vine, take a photo, and leave. The city deserves more.

The Lent district along the Drava river is the most characterful part of Maribor — the old water tower, the Jewish quarter, the riverside promenades. In summer the Lent Festival runs for three weeks with open-air concerts at multiple waterfront stages.

The Maribor Castle is more substantial than it looks from the square — the Regional Museum inside covers Štajerska history from Roman times, with some good Roman-era stonework and medieval armour. The Knights' Hall hosts concerts.

For wine: the Štajerska (Lower Styria) wine region surrounds Maribor. The Mariborska Piramida hill immediately behind the castle has the oldest urban wine-growing area in Slovenia — small local producers, tasting rooms in former cellars. Ask for Šipon (Furmint) and Laški Rizling as the regional white wines.
