What makes Umag special is its accessibility. From Ljubljana, it's one of the closest Croatian destinations — and yet it feels like a different world. Mediterranean pines, turquoise water, grilled fish on the waterfront.

The Drive
From Ljubljana, Umag is about 2 hours. The border crossing is usually quick. Umag is the first major town you reach on the Croatian coast.
Umag — The Practical Details for Arriving Visitors
Umag's old town sits on a small promontory connected to the mainland by a short bridge. The old town itself is compact — a 10-minute walk covers it fully. The resort hotels are spread along the coast north and south of the peninsula, mostly in the Stella Maris and Sol areas (north) and Katoro (south). These are 2–4 km from the old town and connected by road; most guests hire bikes or use hotel shuttles.
A few things to know:
- The ATP Croatia Open runs in mid-July. The stadium is 2 km north of the old town. Hotel prices increase significantly that week. If you're visiting during the tournament, book early and confirm your hotel's shuttle schedule.
- Poreč day trip — 40 km south, 35-minute drive. The Euphrasian Basilica, old Roman street (Decumanus), harbour restaurants. Easy half-day. We can arrange a return transfer.
- Novigrad — 15 km south. A smaller, quieter coastal town with good seafood restaurants. More local feel than Umag or Poreč. Worth a lunch stop on any day trip south.
- Istrian wine country — the interior of Istria (Motovun, Buzet, Grožnjan) is 20–40 km east. Malvasia white wine, Teran red wine, and white truffles in season. Rent a bike or hire us for a full day inland.
