Postojna Cave is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Europe — 24 km of cave passages, vast chambers, stalagmites and stalactites formed over millions of years, and the famous olm (the "human fish") that lives in the underground waters. The cave tour runs on an electric train deep into the mountain, followed by a guided walk through the largest chambers.

Just outside the cave entrance is Predjama Castle — a medieval fortress built into a cave mouth in a sheer cliff face, one of the most dramatic sights in Slovenia.

From Ljubljana Airport, Postojna is just 45 minutes south by private car — making it an ideal first or last stop on a Slovenian trip.

Postojna as a Stop on Your Journey

Postojna is ideally positioned between Ljubljana Airport and the Slovenian coast. Many visitors stop here en route to Piran, Portorož or Koper — arriving at the airport, spending 3–4 hours at the cave and castle, then continuing to the coast. We can arrange the full route as a single booking.

Postojna Cave — Planning Your Visit

The cave is genuinely one of the most extraordinary places in Europe. That said, it's also one of the most commercially managed — and knowing what you're getting helps you enjoy it properly.

The tour begins with an electric train ride 2 km into the mountain. The train is open-sided and moves at 10 km/h through passages lit for dramatic effect. Then you walk approximately 1.7 km through chambers including the Concert Hall (used for actual concerts), the Russian Bridge (WWI prisoner of war construction), and the Diamond Passage. The olm (Proteus anguinus) — the eyeless, cave-dwelling salamander — lives in the underground waters and can be seen in a glass tank in the cave's vivarium section.

• Temperature: 10°C year-round. Bring a jacket even in summer — most people underestimate how cold it is inside.
• Tour length: 1.5 hours including the train ride. Tours depart on the hour.
• Predjama Castle: 9 km from the cave entrance. A 15-minute drive. The castle is built into a cave mouth in a sheer limestone cliff and is genuinely dramatic — not a typical castle. It's worth combining with the cave visit. We can wait and take you there afterward.
• Timing: peak season (July–August) sees very long queues. Arrive at opening (09:00) or pre-book tickets online. Off-season (November–March) is much calmer but some tours are less frequent.
