Discover Opatija
Before Dubrovnik and Split became tourist magnets, there was Opatija. This elegant resort town on Croatia's Kvarner coast has been welcoming visitors since the 1840s, when Austro-Hungarian nobility discovered its mild winters and healing sea air.
Grand villas and palatial hotels line the waterfront. The famous Lungomare — a 12-kilometer seaside promenade — hugs the coastline through lush gardens, past rocky swimming spots, and alongside centuries-old parks.
Opatija feels different from the rest of Croatia. More refined, more relaxed, less crowded. It's the kind of place where you take long walks, eat slowly, and watch the sunset from a café terrace.
What to See & Do
- Lungomare Promenade — 12 km of seaside walking from Volosko to Lovran
- Villa Angiolina & Park — the birthplace of Opatija's tourism, beautiful gardens
- Maiden with the Seagull — Opatija's iconic statue on the waterfront
- Volosko — a charming fishing village on the edge of Opatija, famous for its restaurants
- Swimming — rocky beaches and beach clubs with crystal-clear Adriatic water
- Učka Nature Park — mountain views high above the coast, reachable by cable car
The Drive
From Ljubljana Airport, Opatija is about 1 hour and 40 minutes. The motorway takes you through the Karst region and down toward the coast. The descent to Opatija is dramatic — mountains dropping into the sea.
We handle the Slovenia-Croatia border crossing. It's usually quick — 5 to 15 minutes.
Good to Know
Is Opatija good for a short visit?
Even one night is worth it. The Lungomare walk and a seafood dinner in Volosko make for a perfect short break. But 2–3 nights lets you truly unwind.
Opatija or Rovinj?
Different vibes. Opatija is more elegant and spa-oriented. Rovinj is more bohemian and photogenic. Both are excellent — it depends on what you're looking for.
