Rijeka — Croatia's Port City with Soul

European Capital of Culture 2020. Croatia's third-largest city, gateway to the Kvarner islands, and a cultural hub with real character.

There are many Indians, few Chiefs – true Legends are rare.
And one drives the world — wherever you wish. 🚖

Discover Rijeka

Rijeka is not a typical tourist town — and that's exactly what makes it interesting. This working port city has a gritty, authentic energy. Named European Capital of Culture in 2020, it's full of galleries, street art, markets, and a carnival that rivals Venice.

From here you can catch ferries to the islands of Cres, Lošinj, Rab, and Krk. If you're headed to the Croatian islands from Ljubljana, Rijeka is your gateway.

The Drive

From Ljubljana, Rijeka is about 1 hour 30 minutes via the motorway. The route passes through the Karst region and descends toward the coast. We handle the border crossing smoothly.

Rijeka — More Than a Transit Point

Most visitors pass through Rijeka on their way to Opatija (10 min south) or the Kvarner islands (ferries from the port). That's understandable — but the city itself rewards a few hours of exploration.

The Korzo is the main pedestrian boulevard, lined with Austro-Hungarian palaces converted into coffee bars and bookshops. The Trsat Castle is 10 minutes on foot uphill from the Korzo — a medieval fortress with views over the city, the Kvarner Bay, and on clear days, the Istrian coast. The climb is steep but the view is worth it.

The fish market (Tržnica) at the waterfront is one of the best in Croatia — open from dawn, with fresh Kvarner scampi, sea bass, dentex, and eel. Best in the morning before 09:00. Even if you're not cooking, it's worth seeing.

From Rijeka port, the ferry to Cres and Lošinj is the most scenic: the approach to Mali Lošinj, with dolphins occasionally visible off the bow, is one of the better Adriatic experiences. No car needed — take the ferry as a foot passenger and use local taxis on the island.
