Bohinj is one of Slovenia's best-kept secrets — a glacier lake in Triglav National Park, wilder and quieter than Bled. But getting out without a car requires planning. Public buses are infrequent, and with luggage it's genuinely difficult.

From Bohinj to Ljubljana Airport

Ljubljana Airport (Brnik — officially Jože Pučnik Airport, operated by Fraport Slovenia) is about 75 km from Bohinj — roughly 1 hour by car. We pick you up from your hotel, hostel or campsite and take you directly to the terminal.

Bohinj to Bled — the Twin Lakes Route

Many visitors do both lakes — spending time in Bohinj for the alpine wilderness, then stopping at Bled for the postcard views. We do this route regularly and can combine it with a drop-off at the airport afterwards.

Bohinj to Bled takes about 30 minutes. The road goes through the scenic Bohinj valley and past the Sava Bohinjka river.

Bohinj vs Bled — Why Travellers Choose the Quieter Lake

Bohinj is 26 km west of Bled and entirely different in character. No rowboats, no castle, no tour buses at the car park gate. It's inside Triglav National Park — the lake is larger, wilder, surrounded by true mountain peaks. The water is cold and clear enough to see the bottom at 4 metres. In summer you can swim from the shore without crowds. In autumn, the beech forest around the lake turns gold and the colour is exceptional.

Bohinj — Last Morning Activities Before Pickup

• Morning swim at the lake — the public beach at Ribčev Laz opens early and has the best views across to the mountains. Calm before 09:00.
• Savica Waterfall — 30-minute walk from the car park at Ukanc. 78-metre single drop. One of Slovenia's most impressive waterfalls. Allow 1h 30min total for the walk and return.
• Bike path around the lake — flat, paved, 12 km. Hire from the Ribčev Laz area. Quiet in the morning before the day trippers arrive.
• Vogel cable car — opens 08:00 in summer. Takes you to 1,535m with views over the lake and into the Julian Alps. 20-minute ride up, 30 minutes at the top, 20 minutes down. Allow 1.5h total.
