Getting Out of Piran

Piran is a car-free old town on a narrow peninsula — beautiful, but logistically tricky. The nearest parking and bus stop is a 10-minute walk from most of the old town. Public buses to Ljubljana run a few times a day and take over 2 hours. Getting to the airport is even harder.

From Piran to Ljubljana Airport

Ljubljana Airport (Brnik) is about 130 km from Piran — around 1.5 hours by car on a clear day. This is one of our most popular long-distance routes.

From Piran into Istria

Piran sits right at the border with Croatia. The Istrian peninsula is right next door — Umag is 30 minutes away, Poreč about 45 minutes, Rovinj 1 hour, Pula 1.5 hours.

A private transfer is the most comfortable way to move between the Slovenian and Croatian coasts, especially with luggage or a group. No border queues by car — usually a quick stop and go.

Piran — Your Last Morning Before the Transfer

Piran is one of those rare towns where a morning walk before you leave actually makes sense. The old town is small enough that an early circuit takes 30–40 minutes — and at 07:00, before the day trippers arrive, the light through the Venetian arches and the silence on Tartini Square are genuinely something.

• Tartini Square — the main piazza, named after the Baroque composer Giuseppe Tartini who was born here. The statue in the centre. Coffee at the corner café before loading the bags.
• The town walls and tower (Mestni stolp) — climb if you have 15 minutes. Views over the rooftops to Slovenia and Croatia.
• The fish market on the harbour — opens early. Local fishermen, morning catch, a different energy from the afternoon tourist scene.
• St George's Cathedral — on the highest point of the peninsula. The square in front looks directly over the sea towards Trieste on clear days.

Flying Out via a Different Airport — Piran's Options

Piran is uniquely positioned: it's close to multiple airports, not just Ljubljana. If your flight doesn't operate from Ljubljana, here are the alternatives — we cover all of them.

Trieste Airport is by far the closest option — 40 minutes from Piran. If Ryanair or Wizz Air has your route from TRS, it's the most convenient choice.

Tips for Leaving Piran

• The old town is car-free — we meet you at the main car park (Forma Viva) or the town gate, whichever is closer to your place
• Early morning flights? We recommend picking up the evening before or very early morning — we're available from 4am
• Summer traffic — the coastal road can be slow in July/August; we factor this into timing
