Taxi Legende – Slovenia Airport Transfer

How to Get from Ljubljana

A practical guide to reaching Slovenia's top destinations — and beyond. Bus, train, or private transfer: what actually works, and when.

There are many Indians, few Chiefs – true Legends are rare.
And one drives the world — wherever you wish. 🚖

Ljubljana as a Base

Ljubljana is one of Europe's most compact capitals — and one of its most useful as a travel base. Within two hours by road you can reach alpine lakes, a medieval coast, caves carved by an underground river, and a ski resort. The Croatian border is closer than many Slovenians realise.

The city has good bus connections to most Slovenian destinations. Trains are limited but useful for a few routes. For Croatia and longer journeys, a private transfer is often the most practical option — especially for groups, families with luggage, or anyone without a car.

Below is an honest breakdown by destination: what works, what doesn't, and what to expect.

🇸🇮 Slovenia — Day Trips & Onwards

🏔️ Ljubljana → Lake Bled (57 km)

🚌 Bus ~1h 30min ~€7 · from Ljubljana Bus Station · hourly
🚂 Train not direct Lesce-Bled station is 5 km from the lake
🚗 Private transfer ~45 min · from €75 door-to-door, hotel drop-off
Tip: The bus is perfectly fine for solo travellers. For families with luggage or an early morning arrival, the private transfer saves the hassle of the bus station. The bus drops you at the town, not at your hotel.

🌿 Ljubljana → Bohinj (80 km)

🚌 Bus ~1h 45min ~€9 · changes at Bohinjska Bistrica
🚂 Train ~2h change at Jesenice · scenic route
🚗 Private transfer ~1h 15min · from €90 direct to your hotel or camp
Tip: Bohinj is quieter than Bled and harder to reach by public transport, especially with luggage. The train via Jesenice is scenic if you have time; otherwise the bus or transfer is more direct.

🏰 Ljubljana → Postojna (55 km)

🚌 Bus ~1h ~€7 · regular departures
🚂 Train ~1h ~€7 · station near cave entrance
🚗 Private transfer ~45 min · from €60 drop at cave or Predjama Castle
Tip: One of the easier day trips from Ljubljana — bus and train both work well. Useful to combine with Predjama Castle, which is 9 km from the cave (no public transport between them).

🌊 Ljubljana → Piran (130 km)

🚌 Bus ~2h ~€12 · several daily · direct
🚂 Train no connection nearest station: Koper (15 km away)
🚗 Private transfer ~1h 45min · from €150 to your hotel in the old town
Tip: The bus is good if you're travelling light. Piran's old town is pedestrian-only, so the driver drops you near the entry gate. A private transfer can take you right to your accommodation's nearest access point.

🇭🇷 Croatian Istria & Kvarner

The Istrian peninsula starts about 1.5 hours from Ljubljana. There's no direct train. Buses exist but are slow, with at least one change. For most travellers, a private transfer is the most practical option — especially with luggage and a holiday schedule.

🛳️ Ljubljana → Rijeka / Opatija (130–135 km)

🚌 Bus ~2h 30min ~€15 · direct to Rijeka daily
🚂 Train ~2h 30min Ljubljana–Rijeka · scenic mountain line
🚗 Private transfer ~1h 30min · from €150 to Rijeka or Opatija
Tip: The train to Rijeka is a surprisingly beautiful journey through the Karst and mountains. Worth trying if you're not in a hurry. Opatija is 15 minutes from Rijeka station by bus or taxi.

🏛️ Ljubljana → Poreč / Rovinj / Pula (185–235 km)

🚌 Bus 3h – 4h usually via Rijeka · 1–2 changes
🚂 Train no connection no rail into Istrian peninsula
🚗 Private transfer 2h – 2h 45min · from €220 Poreč / Rovinj / Pula — direct
Tip: For Istrian resorts, a private transfer is the clear winner in terms of time and comfort. Buses to southern Istria (Rovinj, Pula) involve waiting in Rijeka and can add 2+ hours to the journey.

🇭🇷 Continental Croatia & Dalmatia

Croatia has been in the Schengen Area since January 2023 — no passport control at the border. The A1 motorway runs from Ljubljana all the way to Split, making road travel fast and straightforward.

🇭🇷 Ljubljana → Zagreb (160 km)

🚌 Bus ~2h ~€10–15 · frequent departures
🚂 Train ~2h 20min ~€15 · direct · comfortable
🚗 Private transfer ~1h 45min · from €160 door-to-door with luggage
Tip: Bus and train are both good options for solo travellers. For groups (3+ people), a private transfer becomes competitive in cost and is much easier with luggage.

🏞️ Ljubljana → Plitvice Lakes (230 km)

🚌 Bus ~4–5h via Zagreb or direct summer buses · limited
🚂 Train no connection no rail to Plitvice
🚗 Private transfer ~2h 30min · from €270 drop at Entrance 1 or 2
Tip: Public transport to Plitvice is slow and the return is the real problem — buses are infrequent and fill up in summer. A private transfer with a fixed return pickup time is worth it for a day trip.

⚓ Ljubljana → Zadar (340 km)

🚌 Bus ~5–6h via Zagreb · daily departures
🚂 Train no connection no rail to Zadar
🚗 Private transfer ~3h 30min · from €400 motorway all the way
Tip: The bus is the budget option — fine for solo backpackers. For families or groups, the private transfer cuts 2+ hours off the journey and gets you there in the afternoon rather than evening.

🏛️ Ljubljana → Split (480 km)

🚌 Bus ~8–10h overnight buses available · from ~€30
🚂 Train no direct connection multiple changes · 12h+
🚗 Private transfer ~4h 30min · from €570 with a rest stop if needed
Tip: The overnight bus is popular among younger travellers — you sleep through it and arrive in the morning. For families or groups, the private transfer (4.5h on the motorway) is a completely different experience — you arrive rested in the afternoon, door to door.
