From Umag — Closest to the Border
Umag has a unique advantage: it's the northernmost town in Croatian Istria, just 20 km from the Slovenian border. That makes it the quickest Istrian town to reach Ljubljana Airport — about 1.5 hours by private car, significantly less than from Poreč or Rovinj.

Umag — The Closest Istrian Town to Slovenia (and What That Means)
Umag is at the very top of the Istrian peninsula, just 20 km from the Slovenian border at Dragonja. That makes it the fastest Istrian transfer to Ljubljana Airport — typically 1h 30min door-to-door on the motorway. No long coastal drive, no navigating through Rovinj or Poreč traffic.
Umag is best known internationally for the Croatia Open tennis tournament (ATP 250, held annually in July). Outside of that it's a low-key resort — decent beaches, a compact old town on a promontory, and significantly fewer day trippers than Rovinj or Poreč. If you've been here for a relaxed beach holiday rather than sightseeing, that's exactly what it delivers.
The proximity to Slovenia also means it's worth considering as a base if you want to combine Istrian beaches with a day trip to Piran or even Ljubljana. A day return from Umag to Ljubljana is ~3 hours total driving — manageable for a day trip if you want to see the city before flying home.
From Umag: Motorway vs Coastal Road
There are two main ways to drive from Umag north to Ljubljana:
- A9 motorway (Ipsilon) → A1 → LJU — fastest option, ~1h 30min. Standard route for airport transfers. Motorway tolls included in our price.
- Coastal road via Piran — slower (~1h 45min including traffic) but passes through Savudrija, Slovenian Istria, and Piran. If you want a final look at the coast before heading inland, this is the scenic option. Ask us to route this way if you have time.
For early morning flights, we always take the motorway. For afternoon flights with time to spare, the coastal road is a nice send-off.
